The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is a form that students can fill out if they wish to apply for financial aid. It will assist in working out how much your family contribution is and these results are then used to determine if you are eligible for financial aid for school.

The Pell Grant, which is currently being targeted to mothers by Obama and the government, is one form of aid that requires you to fill out an FAFSA.

But what if you already owe FAFSA money? Can you still get the ‘Obama moms back to school’ grant?

Whilst this question is not covered in the official Federal Financial Aid FAQ, one requirement is that “You must not owe a refund on a federal grant or be in default on a federal student loan.”

That means if you already owe money on a federal financial aid package then you can’t be eligible to apply for federal financial aid again at that time.

Pay Off Old Debts
Your best option is to pay off the money that you owe so that you can start with a clean slate.

Other Federal Aid Requirements
Some of the requirements that you must meet in order to receive student aid from the government includes:

1. You have to be a US citizen
2. You have to have a valid social security number
3. You must have a GED or high school diploma
4. You have to be accepted for enrollment in an eligible school and program.
5. You need to show that you have a financial need for the money.

The Pell Grant and other federal aid programs are an excellent way for moms and other students to get money for education, without resorting to a student loan.
